Why Your Focal Subwoofer Sounds Dead (It's Not the Speaker)
I'm the person who takes the panicked calls at a B2B supplier for car audio, electronics, and tools. In my role coordinating aftermarket parts for dealers and installers, I've handled more than 200 rush orders in four years, including same-day turnarounds for car shows and press vehicles.

The deep cause: you ordered the part before the system
A subwoofer is the end of a chain. That chain includes the alternator, battery, wiring, amplifier, signal path, and enclosure. If one link is weak, the sub gets the blame, but the sub didn't create the weakness.
Focal publishes RMS power handling, sensitivity, and recommended enclosure volumes for a reason. Those numbers aren't marketing copy. They're engineering requirements. If the system can't supply what the speaker needs, you'll never hear what the speaker can do.
Power delivery is the first suspect
Underpowering is the mistake I see most often. A Focal Sub 600P subwoofer may be compact, but it still needs clean, stable current. When the wiring is too thin or the alternator is weak, voltage drops. When voltage drops, the amp clips. Clipping sounds nasty, but worse, it can damage the voice coil.
The Focal Utopia subwoofer is an even more demanding example. It's designed to reveal detail. Behind a struggling amplifier, it reveals noise, distortion, and frustration.
So before anyone blames the sub, check the voltage at the amp while the music is playing. If it sags more than 0.5 volts, the sub isn't the problem.
Enclosure and signal are next
Enclosure volume changes the driver's behavior completely. Put that Sub 600P in a box tuned for a different speaker, and the low end disappears. Put a Utopia in an undersized space, and you get a one-note thump instead of bass.
The signal path matters too. A factory head unit often filters out low frequencies. Sending that filtered signal into a sub amp won't magically bring the bottom end back. A line-output converter or a DSP with proper crossover settings is usually part of the fix.
A subwoofer doesn't perform in isolation. It performs in a system. Ignore the system, and you'll hear the system, not the speaker.
The same pattern shows up in tow bars, batteries, and soap
I used to think those requests were unrelated. Now I see the pattern.
Take the Tesla Model Y tow bar. It looks like a direct replacement part: bolt it on, plug it in, go. But the correct tow bar depends on the Model Y's specific mounting points, harness type, and software configuration. If you order first and verify later, you might get a hitch that doesn't fit. Or worse, one that fits but isn't rated for the load. Fitment errors are the leading reason tow bars come back at the warehouse.
Then there's the battery question. After a serious audio upgrade, more shops are adding a solar panel for trickle charger to keep the vehicle's battery above 12.4 volts. That's prevention. If a car sits for a week with an amp driving a Focal Sub 600P subwoofer, the battery can drop below cranking level. - Battery age and condition
- Amplifier RMS output at the planned load
- Recommended enclosure volume or mounting depth
- Signal source and whether you need a converter or DSP
For a Tesla Model Y tow bar, check the vehicle's mounting points and harness compatibility. For a solar panel for trickle charger, confirm the connector and mounting location. For car soap, pick a pH-neutral formula and test it on a small area before the full wash.
None of this is extra work. It's rework prevention. The cost of a missed check is always higher than the cost of making the check. In my world, that's the only rule that never changes.
